Thema: Essentials training course (online)

Overview: This course is part of BookNet Canada’s Tech Forum 2021. It will be delivered remotely via videoconference, and delegate numbers will be limited to a very small group to ensure the quality of the experience.

Benefits of Attending: delegates will learn the principles behind Thema and its use, and how to go about adopting it within their organisation. The course includes a practical hands-on session categorising real-world books and a discussion of best practices to optimise in-store and online discovery.

Course Level: Beginner. This comprehensive course is suitable for delegates with no prior knowledge of Thema. It is aimed at publishing and bookselling staff with an interest in practical book subject classification, particularly in editorial, IT, marketing, or within online or physical retail.

Course Outline: The course content is partly modular and can be tailored to the particular needs and interests of the delegates.

  • Introduction: Book discovery and what Thema is for, its origins, commercial benefits, governance and typical uses; available documentation and tools.
  • More detail: Structure of the Thema category hierarchy, subject codes, qualifiers and extensions; comparisons with other schemes (including BIC, BISAC, CLIL, WGS); post-coordination; Thema in ONIX; outline of an implementation project.
  • The ‘golden rules’ - Six rules for effective use; international examples.
  • Exercise: Hands on categorisation with real-world books.
  • Summary and further resources.

Trainer: Chris Saynor
