Metadata: Primer training course (online)

Overview: This course is part of BIC's 2021 training programme. It will be delivered remotely, and delegate numbers will be limited to a very small group to ensure the quality of the experience.

Benefits of Attending: Delegates will learn the principles behind Thema and its use, and how to go about adopting it within their organisation. The course includes a practical hands-on session categorising real-world books and a discussion of best practices to optimise in-store and online discovery.

Course Level: Beginner. This course is suitable for delegates with no prior knowledge of metadata, particularly those new to the industry.

Course Outline: The course aims to give complete beginners an appreciation of the key role metadata plays in the global book supply chain.

  • Introduction: What is metadata, and what is it for? How can it be managed?
  • More detail: How metadata enters the supply chain; the commercial value of high-quality metadata; the most important metadata ‘fields’, the importance of standards and agreed semantics for data sharing and data quality accreditation.
  • Discussion, summary and further resources.

Trainers: Chris Saynor / Graham Bell
