Thema Workshop (New York)

Overview: This half-day course introduces Thema, the international, multi-lingual subject category scheme, its origin and benefits, and demonstrates how it should be used across the global book supply chain.

Course Level: Beginner. This comprehensive course is suitable for delegates with no prior knowledge of Thema. It is aimed at staff with an interest in practical book subject classification, particularly in editorial, IT, marketing, or within online or physical retail.

Course Outline:The course content is partly modular and can be tailored to the particular needs and interests of the delegates. Course organisers should discuss their requirements with EDItEUR in advance. An individual course usually contains all of the elements below.

Introduction
Book discovery and what Thema is for, its origins, commercial benefits, governance and typical uses; available documentation and tools.

More detail
Structure of the Thema category hierarchy, subject codes, qualifiers and extensions; comparisons with other schemes (including BIC, BISAC, CLIL, WGS); post-coordination; Thema in ONIX; outline of an implementation project.

The ‘golden rules’
Six rules for effective use; international examples.

Exercise
Hands on categorisation with real-world books.
