Metadata Primer

Overview: Benefits of Attending - delegates will gain an appreciation for the importance of high-quality metadata in the book supply chain, the main organisations involved, and an understanding of the role of standards such as ONIX and Thema for the communication of industry metadata.

Course Level: Beginner. This course is suitable for delegates with no prior knowledge of metadata, particuarly those new to the industry. To ensure attendees get the most out of the day, we recommend limiting the number of delegates for this course to 12.

Course Outline: The course aims to give complete beginners an appreciation of the key role metadata plays in the global book supply chain. Course organisers should discuss the outline, with any specific areas of interest or concern with EDItEUR in advance, as each course can be tailored to a limited extent.

Introduction: What is metadata, and what is it for? How can it be managed?

More detail: How metadata enters the supply chain; the commercial value of high-quality metadata; the most important metadata ‘fields’, the importance of standards and agreed semantics for data sharing and data quality accreditation.

Discusson, summary and further resources.
