SOH: Serials Online Holdings -
Release 0.9
The
Serials Online Holdings (SOH) format is designed to convey
information about online serial resources from suppliers –
such as hosting services, publication access management
services, agents or publishers – to end customers in
subscribing libraries. Each instance of the format shows the
holdings of a particular subscribing organisation or library
available via, or known to, the sending party.
Information
in SOH exchanges can be used to advise librarians and their
user communities on which resources are available, in which
formats and from which sources. Details may be directly
viewed and available sources compared, using cascading style
sheets or other applications. Alternatively, the exchanges
may be used to populate resolution servers within the
library organisation concerned.
The
extent of coverage of each subscribed resource (date or
volume/issue ranges) is included in the SOH exchange, as are
details of any applicable embargo conditions in place. The
format is specifically designed so that resources may be
grouped in a flat “A-Z” listing or hierarchically by
supplying service.
Release
0.9 is the version which is currently in the final stages of
piloting and will be available on this site early in July
2004. On completion of the pilots, and the
incorporation of any consequent changes, we will issue a
first full Release, to be numbered 1.0, after which every
effort will be made to maintain upwards compatibility in
future revisions.
