Project Impress

(Implementation, Maintenance and Promotion of the EDItEUR / EDILIBE Standards Set)

EC LOGO IMPRESS, a project of the E.U. Telematics for Libraries programme, aims to support, disseminate and encourage implementation of the book and serials sector EDI standards produced as part of the EDILIBE project by providing maintenance of the message formats, stimulating and supporting their implementation and promoting the benefits of electronic commerce. Having previously completed regional promotional activities in Spain and Italy, this project will include regional promotion of EDI in Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

The project is managed and co-ordinated by EDItEUR, the European group for electronic commerce in the book and serials trade, which is sponsored by the Federation of European Publishers, the European Booksellers Federation and the European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations. EDItEUR acts as an umbrella for a number of national EDI book sector EDI groups, many of them set up with help from EDItEUR, and has 90 corporate members from 17 countries including the US, Canada, Japan and Australia.

The project's tasks include:

  • providing maintenance of the EDItEUR EDI messages, revising the message formats, code lists and implementation notes as required in the light of user demands and changes to the underlying EDIFACT standards
  • stimulating and supporting the implementation of the EDItEUR messages, ensuring uniform and consistent interpretation and implementation of the standards by setting up and servicing implementation groups, help desk facilities, electronic mail support and forums.
  • designing, settting up and maintaining an EDItEUR Internet World Wide Web site and electronic mail list server to support maintenance, implementation and promotion of the EDItEUR EDI standards
  • promoting the use of EDI and the EDItEUR standards to the European book sector in general and the Danish, Swedish and Finnish book sectors in particular by producing local language versions of the EDItEUR Book Sector EDI information pack and organising seminars for leaders of the library, publishing and bookselling sectors in those countries Following some administrative delays, the project started at the end of June 1996 and good initial progress has been made in each of these areas, including:
  • new implementation guides designed to provide extra help for all those adopting the EDItEUR messages and to ensure uniform interpretation of the standards
  • development of the existing messages to include trading in serials
  • a seminar at the Gothenburg Book Fair to launch a Swedish introductory booklet to book sector EDI and the new Swedish book trade EDI group, EDIBOK
