Release 2.1 (revision 02)
Download XML DTD and documentation
Two download packages are available from this page. In order to use the ONIX for Books Product Information Message, you will need both the Release 2.1 format specifications and either the Release 2.1 DTD or the Release 2.1 Schema (available for download from the section below).

An ONIX for Books Product Information Message must be consistent in all respects with both the formal XML definition expressed in the DTD or Schema and the content specifications in the documentation. It is not sufficient to deliver a "well-formed" XML document using ONIX elements. The elements must in their construction (tag name, number, order and content) conform to the rules defined in the DTD and Schema, so that the message as a whole is "valid" in strict XML terms.

Release 2.1 DTD and structure diagrams (revision 02)

This ZIP file contains the set of text files which together constitute a formal definition of the ONIX for Books Product Information Message as an XML DTD. The DTD includes two alternative forms: one using text reference names for the elements, and one using short alphanumeric tags. Both forms of the DTD are identical in their functionality. With the DTD, you can use standard XML software to parse, verify and operate on the content of correctly-formulated Product Information Messages. The DTD is accompanied by a set of structure diagrams in the form of linked HTML files which can be displayed and navigated in your browser.

We recommend that you discard the previous version of the Release 2.1 DTD, and use only the latest version, revision 02. If, however, you find you need to access either of the previous versions, they are still available on the EDItEUR website as revision 00 and revision 01 respectively. See ONIX for Books - Product Information Message - XML Message Specification, Section 5, for more information.

Release 2.1 format specifications (revision 02) and code lists

This ZIP file contains the following PDF documents describing the ONIX for Books Product Information Message:

  • XML Message Specification (revision 02, revised Feb '05)
  • Product Record Specification (revision 02, revised Feb '05)
  • Main Series Record Specification (no changes from June '03 release)
  • Subseries Record Specification (no changes from June '03 release)
  • Overview and Summary List of Data Elements (revision 02, revised Feb '05)

together with the latest issue of the ONIX Code Lists as a set of HTML files. Wherever a code list is referred to in a specification document, there is a hyperlink to the list.

To use the documentation package on your own local PC, you should unZIP it into a folder of your choice. The code lists will unZIP into a subdirectory \codelists within that folder, and provided that you maintain the whole package in this directory structure the links will work correctly.

With the PDF documentation open in an Acrobat Reader window, clicking on a link will cause the relevant HTML code list to open in a browser window, so that the specification of a data element and the code list used in the element can be held open simultaneously in separate windows.

You can also download a list of the changes made in the latest issue of the ONIX Code Lists and/or a printable copy of the entire ONIX Code Lists, and find out how they can be supplied in a format suitable to be loaded directly into a local application system, by clicking here.

Release 2.1

Release 2.1 is an important release - the first release which is the result of feedback from a substantial volume of live usage in several countries - but with full upwards compatibility from Release 2.0. There are many additions to the ONIX for Books Product record format, but senders of ONIX data who do not wish to use the added elements need do nothing more in the first instance than change the release number in the header of their ONIX messages in order to upgrade to Release 2.1.

Following the original issue of Release 2.1 in June 2003, and a number of corrections and minor upgrades made in December 2003 as revision 01, we have made a few further additions, primarily to support the special needs of ONIX implementations in Australia and Canada. These are incorporated into the latest download packages, as revision 02. Most users will be completely unaffected by these additions, and you do NOT need to change the release number in the header of your ONIX messages. The additional level of revision numbering within the release number is used only for purposes of controlling successive minor revisions: see ONIX for Books - Product Information Message - XML Message Specification, Section 5.

As always, the changes are spelt out in detail in the introduction to each of the ONIX for Books specification documents. New users should go straight to Release 2.1.
