ICEDIS
ICEDIS (the International Committee on EDI for Serials) is an organisation composed of publishers, subscription agents, other intermediaries and system vendors, all of whom are active in the sphere of serials publication.
It exists to promote the use of standards and protocols between trading partners in the serials sector. Its underlying objective is to facilitate rapid, accurate and automated communications about journal subscriptions between the industry players involved.
These communications span a range of business use cases, from transactional messaging on orders and renewals to exchanges of rich product information to support sales and customer support.
ICEDIS is co-chaired by senior representatives of subscription agencies and publishers. It works closely with EDItEUR, which provides ICEDIS with expert consultancy on message and standards development as well as advice on implementation and best-practice guidelines.
ICEDIS works within the serials industry:
•To be proactive in the specification, development, testing and implementation of agreed EDI/eCommerce standards
• To encourage the exploitation and acceptance of such standards, thus enhancing cost-effective and value-added services throughout the industry.
• To be recognised as an independent international body for the formulation, maintenance, administration and dissemination of EDI/eCommerce standards between publishers, agents and other industry intermediaries.
• Work together with other standards and trade organisations to optimise the range and acceptability of the standards developed for the industry.
• And closely with EDItEUR, which manages ICEDIS and provides expert consultancy on message and standards development as well as advice on implementation and best-practice guidelines.
Meetings
ICEDIS meets to discuss relevant issues at the Frankfurt Book Fair and by teleconference at other times. Details of any forthcoming ICEDIS meetings are included in our Events section.
The most recent ICEDIS meeting was held on 10 October 2011, just ahead of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The minutes of this meeting can be downloaded here.
ICEDIS Publisher's Price List message v1.1
The ICEDIS Publisher’s Price List message format has been developed to support the transmission of a list of subscription products including price information whether offered by a publisher, subscription agent, online publisher, content hosting service, or any other party that sells subscriptions.
This message can convey price list information for subscription products consisting of a single component, for packages containing multiple components, or for combinations of print and online versions. It can transmit prices based on a variety of pricing models and is also able to identify products that have ceased publication or that have been transferred from one publisher to another.
Version 1.1 has been enhanced so that it can also deal with other, non-journal subscription products such as ebook collections, databases and learning resources. This version also includes structured support for communicating tiered pricing arrangements.
The documentation for the ICEDIS Publisher's Price List message includes the following:
- Publisher's Price List Message Overview document Version 1.1 (published June 2011)
- Eye-readable ONIX for Serials Codelists (published June 2011)
- Publisher's Price List Message XML schema Version 1.1 and codelists (published June 2011)
(Note that the Codelists file must be held in the same folder as the XML Schema)
Previous Release – Version 1.0
An XML schema and documentation are available for the previous release of the ICEDIS Publishers Price List, Version 1.0:
- Publisher's Price List Message Overview document Version 1.0 (updated June 2009)
- Publisher's Price List Message XML schema Version 1.0 (corrected April 2011)
(Note that the Codelists file must be held in the same folder as the XML Schema)
ICEDIS Claim, Claim Response and Claim Cancellation messages v0.1
The ICEDIS Claim message formats have been developed to provide a structured means of communicating claims for missing, damaged or otherwise incorrectly fulfilled journal issues, responses to such claims and cancellations of claims. They are intended to help automate the large volumes of claims transactions commonly encountered in the serials industry.
During an initial trial period, the messages are being piloted between subscription agents and publishers specifically to communicate claims for print journals. Later phases envisage broadening this initial scope, both to include other parties in the supply chain and to accommodate claims for online resources.
The documentation for the pilot versions of the ICEDIS Claim messages includes the following:
- Claim, Claims Response and Claim Cancellation Overview document Version 0.1 (published February 2011)
- Eye-readable ONIX for Serials Codelists Issue 3 (published February 2011)
- Claim Messages XML schema Version 0.1(published February 2011 and corrected April 2011); this zipped package also includes XSD Codelists and HTML message documentation
- Annotated Sample Files for Version 0.1 (published July 2011)
(Note that the Codelists file must be held in the same folder as the XML Schema)
