RFID For The Book Trade
In the retail sector, EPCglobal, administered by GS1global, is leading the RFID standards work with a family of encoding schemes known based on the EPC (Electronic Product Code).
Since GS1 and the International ISBN Agency have been collaborating for 30 years on implementing the ISBN as a barcode, they have set up a joint venture to incorporate the ISBN and a serial number into the appropriate EPC structure (SGTIN-96).
A major element of this work is to allow for third parties such as wholesalers and bookshops to apply RFID tags in situations where publishers are not yet managing their own tags. A progress report is available here.
