The LIBLICENSE Standard Licensing Agreement (revised May 2008) (‘LIBLICENSE’) is a model license compiled and published by the LIBLICENSE Project and hosted by the Center for Research Libraries at http://liblicense.crl.edu/licensing-information/model-license/. (A new and very substantially revised version of LIBLICENSE was published in December 2014. EDItEUR is currently preparing an ONIX-PL expression of the December 2014 revision, and will make it available here as soon as possible. The May 2008 version remains downloadable from http://wp.crl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/licenseagreements/standlicagree.pdf.)
LIBLICENSE is described as ‘an attempt to reach consensus on the basic terms of contracts to license digital information between university libraries and academic publishers’, and aims to be seen both as ‘a model that can be used by university librarians in negotiating particular licensing agreements and, more generally, as a statement by the academic library community of what it considers acceptable policy and practice for licensing digital information’.
It was developed from, and replaces, the CLIR/DLF Model License, now referred to on the LIBLICENSE webpages as the ‘LIBLICENSE Standard License Agreement, original version prepared in April 2001’. This license text is used as the basis for the sample ONIX-PL expression included in the installation package for the OPLE editing software.
Notes on the ONIX-PL expression of LIBLICENSE
These notes explain aspects of the approach which has been taken in creating the ONIX-PL expression of LIBLICENSE. They are cross-referenced to the ‘full view’ and ‘summary view’ of the ONIX-PL expression (see below), and are intended to be read together with the two HTML ‘views’.
ONIX-PL ‘summary view’ of LIBLICENSE
One of the features of the OPLE editing software is that it can be used to generate an HTML ‘summary view’ of an ONIX-PL expression. The summary view provides a concise and easily readable representation of the main features of the expression, with the ability to click on any selected element and see the license wording on which it is based.
For a general introduction to the way in which the summary view is presented, click here. We recommend that you also refer to the notes on the ONIX-PL expression of LIBLICENSE, above.
ONIX-PL ‘full view’ of LIBLICENSE
Also generated by the OPLE editor, the ‘full view’ of an ONIX-PL expression is a readable representation of the complete expression as a single navigable HTML page.
For a general introduction to the way in which the full view is presented, click here. We recommend that you also refer to the notes on the ONIX-PL expression of LIBLICENSE, above.
ONIX-PL expression of LIBLICENSE
The ONIX-PL expression is a single XML document, which can be viewed in your browser or downloaded for offline reference. Note, however, that this is a ‘native’ ONIX XML file, which is intended for machine interpretation rather than for a human reader.
